About Northland Skis

Northland is on a mission to honor the art of alpine skiing with custom, hand-crafted skis that conquer the terrain and wow the skier.

It all started back in 1912 – over 100 years ago – in St. Paul, MN. Northland has been credited as the catalyst in creating America’s love of skiing. From its earliest days, Northland was committed to the quality of their skis and were the skis of choice for Olympic skiers, widely known for performance and unsurpassed quality.

Soon, Northland became the largest manufacturer of skis in the world.

Today, Northland is still the king of carving. While the industry has grown & changed, Northland remains committed to building handcrafted wood skis designed for carving. Craft-made exemplifies the artistic skill and quality obsession that goes into every pair we make.

Located right in the heart of Ski Country USA – Steamboat Springs, Colorado – we live and breathe skiing, and our skis are the true testament. Materials and techniques come out of our shop and are put to the test on-mountain – in minutes. We evaluate our skis daily – in all snow conditions. All terrains. Refinements are envisioned on the mountain. Enhancements come to life in our factory.
The Northland Skis line is an echo of a time when the perfection of craftsmanship and every detail mattered.

Our Approach

The confidence in our skis comes from real world experience. Over the past three years we’ve been designing skis…building, refining, testing in all kinds of snow, gnashing a few, refining again. We don’t outsource anything. Every step of the ski building process is performed by us, in our shop. Handcrafted in its truest form.

Making mass produced skis may be easier but there are no shortcuts when creating and building the ultimate carving ski. Each step in handcrafting the “Ski of Champions” is meticulously measured against exacting quality standards. Our love of the mountains, skiing and American-made quality is exemplified in every pair of Northland Skis.

I ski more than 100 days a year as a ski instructor at Aspen/Snowmass. I used my extensive background as a ski racer for reaching level 3 PSIA-AASI certification. I know skis and I know what I want to feel when I’m looking for performance. When I tip my Northland Skis on edge, the tip of the skis interact with the snow and the skis immediately begins to push back against the sole of my boot. They give an incredibly round carved or blended turn that allows me to complete my turns every time. This type of performance is usually only found in a racing ski. While racing skis are limited in the scope of terrain they prefer, I find my Northland Skis to be incredibly versatile from carving up groomers to busting down powdery chutes. I’ve finally found an all mountain carving ski!

Chris had us demo some Northlands in December, 2022, at Steamboat Resort. They are well made, shaped skis with some weight to them. This makes it easier to turn and carve up the slopes in most snow conditions on all terrain.

They are made out of wood, and I was pleasantly surprised how well I skied on them; therefore, I highly recommend this brand.   Chris did a great job fitting us to some demos and we had a great time!

“I was skeptical about these throwback looking skis and then I demo’d a pair. Whoa! I was impressed by how versatile they were. They work great in the bumps and carve like a dream. Needless to say, bought the 90mm underfoot wider setup. I’ve skied them in Steamboat and Sun Valley last year. Performed well in varied conditions.”

I was hooked the moment I clicked the binding in on the Northland CL178’s and took my first run down the Steamboat slopes. The carve was so much more controlled than the Atomics skis I had just ditched. It defied logic. Normally, when I hear some new equipment will blow me away, I assume it is marketing fluff. I have long subscribed to the old school of “it’s the archer not the arrow”. But I could feel the difference from the start with the Northland skis.

I love to ski on handcrafted labor’s of love. The Northland Sport Carvers are a ski that translates the language and the passion by which they were created to an expression of performance, high-adventure and integrity. Perfect for the all-mountain explorer that also likes to jump in the gates and blow the pipes out!
